Homemade & Handmade
The Homemade & Handmade by TBC jewellery line evolved from a dream that was first conceptualized in the playground of a Montreal elementary school and finally brought to fruition in 2017.
All the jewellery found on this site as well as the Homemade & Handmade by TBC Etsy store is handmade using precious metals and beads. Please refer to the FAQ below to learn more about the materials used.
TBC, The Beader Chef, is a food blog that was started in the summer of 2016. It's founder and writer, Michelle Barbagallo, started it as a way to explore some of her other interests besides science after completing her bachelor's degree in biochemistry. Now as a pharmacology master's student, she curates TBC in her spare time and creates jewellery for the Homemade & Handmade by TBC jewellery line available on Etsy.
Sterling Silver (.925)
Sterling silver is an alloy made up of 92.5% silver mixed with 7.5% of another metal, usually copper. Alloys are typically more durable; copper's addition to silver often increases its hardness and therefore its durability over fine silver – this, however, does not prevent it from getting damaged if it is aggressively banged around. Sterling silver is often loved for its colour and luster; this is also achieved by its alloy formulation. Unfortunately, its composition causes it to tarnish over time. Not to worry though! There are many ways to delay a piece from tarnishing and recover its colour after it has been tarnished!
Silver, Gold & Rose Gold Filled
Silver, gold and rose gold filled contain real silver, gold or rose gold. They are not the same as an alloy (i.e. sterling silver or low karat gold) because the precious metal content is not the same throughout the entire piece/bead. Filled refers to silver, gold or rose gold being fused with heat and pressure to a brass core. Silver filled will tarnish over time, however can be clean very delicately.
Silver, Gold & Rose Gold Plated
Silver, gold and rose gold plated cannot be considered to have any real silver, gold or rose gold in its composition. The names are used to describe the colour of the coating placed on, what is usually a brass, base metal. It is much more affordable than its filled, alloyed or pure counterparts. With time and varying skin compositions, the plated coating can discolour and will wear off revealing the base metal.
